On April 26, 2020, Troy Missouri Police Officers arrived at a residence to question the homeowner regarding recent neighborhood complaints of a man “peering into vehicles.” Upon confrontation, the officers began using foul language shouting obscenities at all parties present and engaged in a scuffle with the homeowner. The officers tackled the man to the ground, and tazed him multiple times as seen in a video taken by a bystander at the residence. The reason for such excessive force? The man was not comfortable leaving his driveway to identify himself to police. While he was well within his rights, the officers engaged with physical force, including punching the man, pointing a loaded gun in his face while he was on the ground, and threatening to “f*ck him up.” The officers also used profanity in calling him names and telling the other bystanders, one of which was the victim’s partner to “f*ck off” when she asked them to stop punching him.

The result of this altercation? A case of mistaken identity. The man who was thrown to the ground, kicked, beaten and threatened was not the man the police were after in the first place. Allegedly, the department is investigating this incident but have neglected to update the public on the progress of this investigation and have made attempts to suppress the video footage and comments from their Facebook page.

The Troy Missouri Police Department needs to investigate both officers involved in this confrontation and the officers need to be dismissed from the force. Officers are sworn to serve and protect and this altercation was a gross mishandling of their power. The Department needs to do extensive investigating of officers using excessive force and profanity towards the public in such an unprofessional manner.
