We feel that the bathing suit policy restricting female students from showing their torsos while swimming (bikinis) and allowing male students to expose their torsos while swimming (not wearing a swim shirt) is both sexist and negatively targets all genders. We believe this because first of all, one of the main reasons that girls are not allowed to show their torsos is because administrators do not want people to make fun of each other's torsos and they do not want people to feel ashamed of their bodies. Having this only apply to girls implies that boys do not make fun of each other's bodies, and that boys do not feel embarrassed because of their body type. Another reason that bikinis are restricted is to prevent the objectifying of the female body. This again implies that boy's bodies are not objectified, which is not true. We also struggle with the wording of the policy. First of all, it implies that only girls cannot wear bikinis, meaning that boys can. It also says that girls must wear a one-piece or a tankini covering the same amount of space, implying that they cannot wear swim trunks and a swim shirt if that is what they feel more comfortable in. In conclusion, we find it necessary to change the policy to make sure that everyone covers their torso for reasons listed above, and to have a public announcement made to correct this. We also propose working with the trip advisors to change the wording of this for the future.
