In light of the protests regarding the wrongful death of George Floyd at the hands of police, Trinity County CA Sheriff Deputy Brandon Woodhouse posted a picture on his public Instagram that depicted Mr. Floyd being smothered in a sexual act rather than the true nature of his death at the hands of police brutality. The graphic picture superimposed a black porn actor over the police officer responsible for killing Floyd by placing his knee on his throat. Mr. Woodhouse's captioned the picture "First Amendment there Instagram;)". Mr. Woodhouse's actions mocked the unjust death of George Floyd and made light of a grave situation, demonstrating his flippant attitude toward proper police and relations to race. As an officer of the law he is supposed o make the public feel safe- including black citizens- not covertly threaten and humiliate grieving families. His actions demonstrate his racist attitude towards people of color and reflect on the Trinity Co Sheriff's department as a whole as well as the whole county. TCSO's only action regarding the issue thus far is instructing Mr. Woodhouse to remove the post and putting him on paid leave. Mr. Woodhouse has allegedly apologized to his superiors but has made no apology on his own behalf to the public. We can not entrust someone with clearly racist tendencies to uphold the law and peace of society. Mr. Woodhouse's actions have quickly gained notoriety to surrounding counties, including Redding and farther. His actions portray to the public that Trinity county is an intolerant and racist place- to the contrary, Trinity is a great community of people who step up for each other, but allowing Mr. Woodhouse to bypass punitive action will send the wrong message to the world. Help us push TCSO to try to make this situation right by firing Mr. Woodhouse or taking further punitive action beyond "paid leave."
