To Trinity College Dublin,

We, as Trinity students, draw your attention to the crisis in Myanmar, where the military had staged a coup, detaining the State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint along with other democratically elected members of parliament. The military has banned Facebook and shut off Internet access, on and off, from the 6th of February to stop citizens from mobilizing but more so to silence the Burmese citizens, to cut off contact with each other and the world.

The Civil Disobedience Movement is well underway since the 3rd of February, spearheaded by healthcare workers, followed by engineers, teachers and lecturers, a refusal to work under the military. As of the 6th of February, thousands of Burmese people have taken to the streets of Yangon after 6 days of peaceful protests. The situation is dire- communication is cut, and with a high possibility of a brutal crackdown given the military's past, having killed thousands of students in the past 1988 pro-democracy riots.

Burmese citizens risk the wrath of the military on themselves and their families when they speak out. Trinity has been highly esteemed for giving students the liberty to speak their minds, which is a privilege that the people of Myanmar are not afforded. As a result, Trinity has produced some of the greatest, outspoken minds in Irish history as their alumni.

We urge the University to advocate across the faculty and alumni to take a private stance against the military coup in Myanmar and we urge you to officially condemn the unlawful and inhumane actions the military has done to the citizens. We urge you to speak up about the importance of an educational institution in uplifting the liberty of students’ and their freedom of speech and freedom to fight for their futures so international private schools in Myanmar will be forced to respond.

We stand in solidarity with the citizens of Myanmar, and we stand by their freedom of speech. We stand in support of them in their march for democracy, in their collective fight for their futures.
