Christian studies MS / Grading by Ms. Ahn

Dear Ms. Ahn,

We have a great interest in Christian studies and very much appreciate the class you are teaching.

However, we acknowledge that your recent grading practice reflects various problems in terms of SFS grading rules and ethics. In particular, we recognize the following:

Work time allocation was inappropriate: For the “theories of origin” debate, the time students were given to also produce a video was highly insufficient. Consequently, everyone in the class failed to complete this task in a timely manner. This was not the responsibility of the students, and does therefore also not justify to lower their grades in any manner.

Grades do not adhere to the rubric: The evaluation of the presentation summative is based on criteria not present on the rubric (presentation length, orthographic conventions). Additionally, the lowering of grades due to unfinished videos is inconsistent with the criteria of the rubric.

Grading reflects favoritism: Our own account of stronger or weaker student work does not match with the actual grades. Rather, many feel that better grades have been attributed on the basis of personal preferences.

Various students have already pointed out the problems above in a bilateral conversation with you. However, the grading apparently still remains the same. Therefore, we kindly repeat our request to take our rightful concerns seriously, and to rectify the grades by transparently observing SFS rules and ethics.

We are of course also happy to further discuss this matter with you personally.

With best regards
