In the past, studies have shown that increased liquor intake leads to higher rates of domestic violence. The most vulnerable populations are our women, our children, the elderly, and the differently abled. Due to the Covid-19 Induced Lockdown in India, we have already seen a major spike in domestic violence. For example, there was a recorded increase in calls to helplines already during the second week of April this year, ~ 2500 calls)

Extending the ban on the sale of liquor is not a foolproof solution, but it will go a long way during this lockdown. Due to the nature of the situation, the vulnerable populations have no means to avoid this type of violence, as they are in forced proximity with their abusers- especially now. The victims often hesitate to report abuse to the authorities in fear of judgement, backlash, and facing more violence. Therefore through this petition, we are calling for all Indians to unite and protect the segments who cannot protect themselves. We aim for this petition to reach the highest government offices, as well as the various district offices, so that this ban can be implemented throughout India as soon as possible.
