(Metro Vancouver, B.C. - September 30, 2017) The Concerned Muslim Residents of the Tri-Cities issues the following statement in response to recent media reports about the Islamic Society of B.C., which operates Masjid Al-Hidayah and Islamic Cultural Centre in Coquitlam.
"As Muslim residents of the Tri-Cities and attendees at Masjid Al-Hidayah, we would like to assert the fact that none of the community members nor the mosque are involved in any way with terrorist organizations inside or outside of Canada.
The Muslim community in Tric-ities is deeply concerned by the reported financial irregularities at the Islamic Society of British Columbia brought to light by a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) audit for the period between October 1, 2010 to September 30, 2013. The community rightly expects the Islamic Society of BC to operate within the confines of the rules and regulations governing charities in Canada. Sadly, this does not appear to be the case for several years.
"The local Muslim community does not have any confidence in the existing management of the Islamic Society of BC, which thus far has refused to disclose relevant information to the community and its members. The situation is untenable and is damaging to the integrity of Masjid Al-Hidayah that is frequented and loved by all of us.
"We urge the current Board of Directors at the Islamic Society of B.C. to act in the best interests of the society and the community by resigning, thereby allowing for a lawful, transparent and democratic process to take place to install new management.
"We emphasize that the Muslim community at large should not be held responsible for the actions by the existing management of the Islamic Society of B.C."
