Trash Mountains are Flooding the Streets of New York City
Why this petition matters
Dear New York Representatives,
Every day, New York City produces more than 12000 tons of trash bags. This amount may not seem like much at first, but when you do the math, you get 24,000,000 pounds of trash bags that are dumped onto sidewalks/streets. In my neighborhood, I always see trash bags, piled onto each other like pieces of rocks. Whether it’s a nice and glorious day or a rancid and hideous day, there are always at least 3 piles near my apartment building. Rats roam the streets and trash plagues every corner of the city. One may argue that it isn’t a big deal since the government will fix it sooner or later, yet they fail to understand that this “current” problem has been going on for multiple decades, and still hasn’t been solved. I propose that we have more garbage trucks and trash bins deployed around the city to improve our sanitation.
Each day in New York City, garbage bags surge through the streets. They’re scattered across the city like ants, yet there’s a minimal effort put in by the government to assist with this issue. According to an analysis of city data by OpenTheBooks, a nonprofit watchdog group, and The New York Times, The piles of trash bags also help feed New York’s rat population. Rat sightings reported to the city’s 311 hotlines soared to 17,353 last year from 12,617 in 2014. (Paybarah, 2020). This matters because mountains of trash bags that lie in the streets attract many rats/mice. This is significant because “soaring” means to increase rapidly above the minimum level. In this case, the rat sightings have increased to a ginormous amount due to the extreme quantity of trash bags littered all over New York City. According to the DSNY, sanitation workers collect more than 12,000 tons of garbage and recycle every day in New York. That's 26 million pounds total, or more than three pounds per person, per day (Mench, 2022). This is imperative because sanitation workers have to collect 12000 tons of trash daily every day. This is important because “tons” is a unit of weight equal to 2,240 pounds. In this case, this describes the absurd weight and quantity of the trash bags that have been picked up by sanitation workers, and if we divide 26,000,000 by 2240, then we get 11607, which might not seem like a lot, but for that many trash bags to have a weight equivalent to 1 ton is insane. This shows that in New York City, garbage floods the streets.
I formally request that we send a fraction of the funds to the Department of Sanitation to be set into the New York’sbudget to clean the streets by putting them into containers and to introduce changes to trap pests. This change will help produce more positivity in our community, and reduce the rat population since the rats are attracted/lured to the stench of trash. It will also clean up our environment and attract more visitors and overall, will increase our popularity. Currently, there are 1,587,765,000 dollars dispensed towards the department of sanitation which is more than enough to clean the city. Now Adams, who has emphasized beautifying city streets as he attempts to lure tourists and their wallets back to the city, is showing interest in the issue. He increased the budget for street sweeping this week by $11 million and launched a $1.3 million pilot program to get black trash bags off sidewalks and into tidy containers (Goldenberg, 2022). This is paramount because now, Mayor Adams is focusing on trying to solve the current issue with garbage mountains by adding money to sanitation to improve street sweeping. This is vital because “beautifying” means improving the appearance of. In this case, This suggests that Adams is now taking in our opinions and taking a long look at the situation that’s being dealt with right now by trying to make the city look appealing and shiny again by removing trash bags off sidewalks through a $1.3 million pilot program. The Department of Sanitation first announced its "Clean Curbs" initiative back in March 2020…This approach—already popular in cities like Barcelona—would get piles of trash bags off the sidewalks and locked away from rats and other pests that thrive on New York City's all-you-can-eat garbage buffets. This is key since The Department of Sanitation is now launching a “Clean Curbs” initiative to help solve the trash problem by getting rid of trash on sidewalks. This is imperative because “locked” means to fasten or secure with a lock. In this case, this means that the “Clean Curbs” initiative is a plausible solution to the trash mountain complication that's occurring in New York City since it traps rats/pests, and can remove piles of trash from sidewalks/alleyways. This is the reason why you should accept my request to send funds to clean New York City.
New York City is a well-known city, yet, within it lies garbage mountains, rat infestations, and much more. In this case, I propose that we have garbage trucks and trash bins deployed around the city. Our community does not like to be silenced and will speak up about any problem that harms the city's reputation, or the environment. This very letter is a message to the New York government to heed your citizen's requests and consider them. This is because we are responsible for the countries booming popularity and growth, so I ask you again for the last time to accept my request, for it’s purely for the greater good.
