Release real-time transit data publicly to all application vendors

Real-time transit data allows users of public transport to see live updates on arrival times and vehicle locations. Transport for NSW has released real-time data for Sydney buses and trains to just a few select application vendors, and insists on withholding access to the general public and other vendors.
What does this mean for you? If you don't own one of those few select applications, you don't get real time transport information, even if the developer of your application proactively wants to support it. You either need to pay for one of the promoted applications, or live without real-time data.
What does this mean for application developers? Competition is a great thing, and Australia has a long history of encouraging competition in the marketplace. Giving only a select few developers access to this data significantly hurts smaller developers who want to offer more choice in the market, and in the end this means less choice for users.
When questioned about their process of releasing data only to a select few developers, Transport for NSW commented: "TfNSW does not consider this process as anti-competitive in the aim is to expand the provision of information about transport services to assist people to use those public transport services"
