Tally Francis started this petition to Transport For London and

“The Big Smoke” - a victorian term coined for London that reflected the cloud of smog that perpetually surrounded the newly industrialised city.

And two centuries later, London is still struggling to breathe.

The third worse European city in terms of air quality, one of the most polluted places in the UK, in January of 2018 London had reached its annual legal air contamination limit within only a few weeks.

These record-breaking levels of nitrogen dioxide are contributing to more than 9.000 premature deaths  each year. Living next to a busy road is about as harmful as being passively smoking ten cigarettes a day. In 2014, 21% of London’s CO2 emissions were generated by transport.

These rapidly growing problems cannot, should not, be ignored.

So what can we do?

London residents make over 7 million car trips in London on average - among these, 1.6 million could potentially be walked and 2.7 could be cycled. Then why aren’t they?

For the average Londoner getting about with public transport will usually cost them over a fiver a day. The issue is that to reduce air traffic congestion, we need to increase the use of more sustainable transport - which includes the underground and buses.

SO this zero-sum game demands a stimulus, a motivator that favours one side.  And it’s starting to look like the rapid decline of our environment isn’t quite enough.

A big step forward would be a “Clean Air Pass” - for £2 only, all Londoners could travel free for the day. This is not unlike the “Forfait anti-pollution” introduced in Paris in the summer of 2018. For one day a month, citizens can move around sustainably practically free of charge.

We WILL work towards a cleaner London. And every action counts. So please sign this for a chance to make this day a reality.
