Why this petition matters

Started by Rob McGibbon

There is NO safe time for pedestrians to cross at the north side of Battersea Bridge.

Consequently, families with young children, the elderly, the disabled - indeed, everyone - is forced to make a perilous dash across this horrendously busy road in front of moving traffic.

The traffic lights that control vehicle flow from all directions at the crossroads with Cheyne Walk and Beaufort Street in Chelsea SW3 interchange instantly. Therefore, the ONLY time to cross is when traffic is on the move.

On 13th January, 29-year-old Jack Ryan died after he was hit by a car travelling south on Battersea Bridge. Witnesses said that he was crossing between traffic on the up-slope of the northern section. It is my assertion that Mr Ryan, who was out jogging, would not have needed to even consider crossing at that dangerous point if a safe pedestrian crossing existed at the junction with Cheyne Walk.

Residents and local politicians have lobbied Transport For London for YEARS to get change - but all requests for positive action have always been stonewalled. The main reasons cited for keeping the status quo are "traffic flow" or "cost".

How on earth can this situation be allowed to continue for such spurious reasons? This flawed traffic management system is destined to end in further tragedy. However, this is easily avoidable.

Something MUST be done.

I am campaigning for the installation of a pedestrian timer countdown crossing at the north junction.

At worst, the sequencing of the traffic lights should be altered to create a RED STOP period for ALL traffic. This solution could be fixed in an instant at NO real cost, while data & costing studies are completed regarding a permanent crossing. Surely, a trial of this idea is worth doing expeditiously?

Please sign this petition, then tell others, and between us we can all help Make Battersea Bridge Safe To Cross.

Ps: I have been reading all your comments. Thank You. Keep them coming because I will print them out and - when the time is right - I will present ALL of them to the most senior executive at TFL. RM. (18/01/20)
