Why this petition matters

Started by Alan O'Reilly

There is a serious problem with traffic along the Marconi-Maypark roadway which passes from Kill Avenue to Lower Glenageary road through Honeypark, Dun Laoghaire.

There is a high volume of traffic passing through on a daily basis that I suspect way exceeds expected traffic for the initial planning. A large proportion of the traffic are driving at very dangerous speeds. Drivers are using this route as a short cut to Tesco and the Lower Glenageary road from Kill Avenue.

This part of Honeypark has a concentrated population of young families with very young children. There is a constant threat when crossing the road. The parking bays for houses along this road way have no boundary between the parking bays and the roadway so parents are always on high alert. There is also an elderly population which are also threatened by the high speed of cars passing through.

This issue has been ongoing for several years.

To date there has been no assessment of the current traffic situation by a professional traffic management consultancy firm.

Cosgraves Development Limited placed several ramps along the stretch of road in an effort to slow traffic. These ramps are ineffective. They slow approximately 10-20% of traffic. These ramps are notorious for damaging car suspension. They are also not in line with current traffic management methods used by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Council who are due to take over management of Honeypark in the near future.

This stretch of roadway is also bordered by Honeypark recreation area. There is a heavy footfall crossing this road on a daily basis. A large propration of this footfall are children. There is currently not one marked pedestrian crossing along this stretch of road.

The corner at the Maypark end of the roadway is a T junction of sorts. Defined boundaries and right of way at this junction are poorly marked. There is constant confusion and near collisions on a daily basis. The road is used on a daily basis by an ever increasing number of courier vans that are delivering goods to the heavily populated apartment blocks in Honeypark. These drivers are unfamiliar with this junction and unfortunately generally appear to be driving against the clock.

I propose that Lauri management and Cosgraves Development Limited use the services of professional Traffic Management Consultancy firm to assess the current traffic situation along this roadway and proceed with the required alterations. This is an ongoing issue that has never received the required attention and consideration that it deserved despite it constantly being discussed at the Honeypark AGM. This petition is for the attention of Lauri Managment, Cosgraves Development Limited and the Traffic Management Team at Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

We request that measures are taken to reduce speed and improve safety for pedestrians along the discussed stretch on roadway. This petition has been signed by almost every resident of Marconi Crescent and Maypark that are positioned along this roadway. We thank you for your careful consideration of our petition.
