Why this petition matters

Started by Alexis Shoemaker

5th ave and 25th street is known as “St.Pete’s deadliest intersection”. This Intersection is in between two neighborhoods, and adjacent to St.Pete High, a laundromat, a bus stop, and a coffee shop. Many people walk their dogs across 5th ave to Booker Creek. Students cross this street to go to school, sometimes when it is still dark out.

At least once a month, a bad accident happens at this intersection. People that stop for the crosswalk get rear-ended. Or, drivers swerve off the road to avoid a stopped car, and have taken out trees, signs, light poles, and even driven through the front of the building because they were avoiding the crosswalk. Yes, drove through the front of the building. Seriously.

Most recently, this past week, a 24 year old kid was crossing the intersection. The crosswalk lights were flashing. He waited next to his bike until lanes of traffic were stopped. All lanes had stopped cars except the very last lane. He was almost through the intersection, and a car was going about the speed limit, which is 40mph.

We spend all this money on sky risers and new bus transportation to the beach but we are asking to protect our community and prevent future community deaths. Add a crosswalk light, as we did all along Park Blvd in Pinellas Park. We need to do more and provide better for our community and our safety. After so many accidents and lives have been lost at the intersection of 5th Ave N and 25th St N, it has become negligence by the hands of our city. This must change; save our community please.
