People of color - particularly African Americans - will spend over a billion dollars in this year alone. The majority of these dollars are spent outside of their communities. And yet, their communities are the most neglected, ignored and marginalized communities in the city. When we talk about the overwhelming disparities in diseases related to health - having the proper nutrition and the ability to access resources that would combat these issues is critical. Still, knowing all this, stores like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Native Foods will look to the North Side or Hyde Park to open new stores and market to a certain demographic. People of color are not in that demographic. When we talk about dismantling racism and injustice....let's look at where it begins. Food, being hungry, having the right foods, being and living healthy, jobs for communities, supporting marginalized communities and being about "the change you wish to see in this world" starts at this level!
Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Native Foods - OPEN STORES ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO!
Vegans, vegetarians and people that want healthy options don't only live on the North Side or in Hyde Park.
