At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of grocery stores stopped letting customers bring their own bags from home. This policy change was made to keep as many outside germs out of stores as possible in an effort to keep staff and shoppers healthy and safe.

While well-intentioned, this policy needs to be walked back now that we know more about the virus and how it is most likely to be spread. Over 100 scientists have signed a statement that reusable containers (including bags) are safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. And according to the Los Angeles Times, "reusable bags pose no more risk than anything that comes into contact with groceries and isn’t properly washed, including the hands of shoppers."

Some chains have started to allow reusable bags again, but others, including Trader Joe's, have not. Meanwhile, stores including Target and ALDI never banned them and simply ask customers to bag their items themselves.

It's time for Trader Joe's to follow suit and allow customers to bring their own bags. Even though they use paper bags and not plastic, it actually requires more energy to produce paper bags than plastic ones. Allowing reusable bags is one small step toward a greener future.
