Add Subtitles to Spyro: Reignited Trilogy's Cutscenes!

Last year saw the release of Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy, a remake of the first three Crash Bandicoot games for the Playstation 4, and subsequently the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC earlier this year. This game failed to meet accessibility requirements by not including subtitles for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, or even for those who do not possess English as their native language. While the Crash Bandicoot games aren't dialogue-heavy, it's still a crucial element for players to understand the story.

Spyro: Reignited Trilogy has just been released for the Playstation 4, and also fails to include subtitles for its in-game cut-scenes. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy is developed by Toys For Bob and published by Activision, the same as Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy. Some elements in-game do have subtitles, however, but not the cut-scenes such as the intro to the games, and dialogue spoken by the dragons you rescue throughout.

I have contacted Activision Support numerous times and left posts on their forums regarding the inclusion of subtitles in these games, and the response has been significantly underwhelming. The first response I received was:

"Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback with us. I will gladly send your suggestion to add subtitles to the studio directly. I will let you know as soon as it has been sent."

This was then followed up by:

"Thank you again, it has been successfully sent to the studio! I cannot guarantee that subtitles will be added in-game, but I can assure you that they will review your suggestion. Please, let us know if you need anything else!"

I have also contacted Toys For Bob via email on numerous occassions, but they only send out an automated response that states:

"Thank you for taking the time to email us here at Toys for Bob. We're hard at work on our current project so please refer to the directions below for all related questions." This is followed by some links that aren't helpful for this issue.

There has already been a petition for subtitles to be added to Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy, to no end. I hope that this petition can raise further awareness of the need for accessibility in games. In 2018, no company should be lacking accessibility when offering products to their customers.

My goal is to amass as many signatures as possible in support of those who require subtitles/captions in these video games so that Activision/Toys For Bob release an official statement and hopefully release an update for both Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy so that they may have subtitles in English and other popular languages.

Here are some statements from members of the community, namely the Activision Forums and Spyro Subreddit.

"I am extremely annoyed as my daughter looked so forward and waited with great anticipation for the new Spyro game only to be saddened and deeply upset after we purchased the game as it has no subtitles and she is profoundly deaf this was a game of her childhood that brought her much enjoyment and now she is unable to play the reignited game this game should be advertised as not deaf-friendly as it is a game for the hearing only". - Xedaila

"This is super disappointing. My wife has an audio processing disorder and therefore relies on subtitles. Companies really need to take the basic effort to include these options for disabled peoples." - newtype06

"I agree, in this day and age this is disgraceful behaviour, they did the same with crash bandicoot, I'm deaf and this is becoming a thing for Activision I will have to stop purchasing their games since they are clearly anti-disability." - Bigbadbobc

"I am hard of hearing and have been slowly losing my hearing and while I can (often barely) hear the dragons now, in a couple of years a game without subtitles is just not going to be an option for me to play. It is messed up that Activision is not taking their deaf and hard of hearing players into consideration. It’s 2018. How does a game lack subtitles in 2018?? Step it up, Activision." - Bobkitty1123

Every single signature will go a long way to ensure that the fight for accessibility continues so that every gamer doesn't feel left out when exploring these nostalgic worlds.

Thank you.
