Shower Shout Out! Let's Make Westport Locker Rooms Safe for Our Kids

Westport Mom, Irene Penny, has two children heavily involved in sports and activities around town. On January 18, 2018, her 10 year old son exited his Parks & Rec. swim lessons and stated an adult male was showering in the boys locker room at Staples High School.
In an effort to address what felt like an extremely inappropriate situation, Irene reached out to several officials at Staples High School, as well as the superintendent and Parks and Rec. administration.
The gentleman was asked to use a private handicapped shower or the coaches personal shower. He refused and continued to utilize the communal shower area while Irene's son and other children were present.
As a fellow Westport mom and Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I am joining forces with Irene to secure the safety of all children in our community. In my personal and professional opinion, it is neither safe nor appropriate for children to be bathing unattended in communal showers with adult strangers. Our town does NOT have a policy in place requiring adults to shower separately from unattended minors.
Please help us update town policy with Parks & Rec to keep our kids safe!
