PURPOSE: Petition To Safely Return to Full-Time Academic Day for Weston Public Schools – To Be Presented to the Weston Board of Education Prior to the Scheduled October 8th, 2020 BOE Meeting

Dear Weston Parents,

WHY NOW: As we end September 2020 and the first four weeks of school in Weston it seems an appropriate time for evaluation. We would like to begin by emphasizing this is not an indictment of the teachers, who have been placed in a fundamentally “no-win” situation. Just the opposite, we value our teachers immensely and urge the Weston School District to free them to do what they do best: to teach.

For September 2020, the Weston K-5 (WIS & HES) students only had seven, half hybrid, days in school, for a total of 31.25 hours. Pre-Covid, these same students typically spent 35 hours per week and over 140 hours per month in school. If we extrapolate this first month out to the 2020-2021 Academic School Year, our children will fulfill 60-80 days of the State mandated curriculum rather than the typical 180 days. Combine this with the shortened 2019-2020 Academic Year of approximately 120 days in school, the result is that each of our K-5 students will arrive in June 2021 approximately a full academic year behind their State scheduled curriculum.

While Weston Public Schools have tested this half day Hybrid Model, many neighboring school districts have chosen to bring their K-5 students back full-time safely and generally without incident. As we arrive in October, eight of our neighboring eighteen School Districts in Fairfield County have brought the K-5 students back into school full time while an additional six Districts are scheduled to bring the K-5 children back full time in the first week of October. Fourteen out of eighteen Districts will be in school full time while our children in Weston get a half day hybrid model. Our children in Weston will be left materially behind students in neighboring districts if this is allowed to continue.

ACTION: The Covid-19 Transmission metrics are compellingly favorable towards more in-person learning. The metrics at the State, County and Town level continue to be among the lowest in the country. With that we ask for your support in petitioning the Town of Weston Board of Education and Superintendent McKersie to provide the following:

1.       Immediately Return All K-5 Students to Full-Time, Every Day

2.       Provide dedicated Full-Time Teacher(s) to Teach “Virtual Classroom” for Full-Time Distance Learning Students (K-5)

3.       Commit to completing the full state-mandated academic curriculum for every grade for the 2020-2021 Academic Year.

Please advocate for your children’s academic, social and emotional future by signing the Petition and share this Petition with friends in Weston………Together we can make a difference.
