Becky Mosher started this petition to Town of Oakville Mayor and Councillors

We the undersigned citizens of the Town of Oakville are in strong opposition to the proposed Boardwalks and Bridges on the 16 Mile Creek for the following reasons:

Permanent Damage to Wildlife: The 16 Mile Creek green belt area between the Cornwall Bridge and the Rebecca Bridge is an environmental marvel in the midst of our Town.  This area is the home to nesting areas for Swans, multiple species of ducks, deer, Great Blue Herons and over 50 types of birds - not to mention over a dozen different species of fish.  Any construction in this area would permanently disrupt the delicate natural ecosystem for these and many other animal species that call this unique area home.

Destruction of Natural Environmental Area: The 16 Mile Creek green belt area is a natural environment that is second to none in the Halton Region.  In fact, this area boasts a large area of wet lands, natural waters and marsh lands that would suffer irreversible damage if a Boardwalk was built in this area which would require hundreds of support posts driving directly into the ground, waters and Marsh lands.

Erosion:  The 16 Mile Creek area is highly susceptible to erosion of the embankments which is where the bridges are proposed to be affixed to.  The embankments on both sides of the Creek are critical to the maintenance of the stability of the ecosystem, as well as the homes/businesses that are built right on those embankments.

Lack of Parking Facilities:  The proposed areas of the bridges have little to no vacant parking spaces available which would mean users of the Boardwalk would be forced to park up and down all the neighbourhood streets surrounding the bridge areas.  Specifically the bridge proposed at the North/South Forster Park area has a community with zero parking spaces and even the proposed South Bridge at the Canoe Club has an already full capacity of parking on the weekends.  Users of the Boardwalk would be forced instead to park in Downtown Oakville lots that are already over capacity according to Town's own Parking Study which would drive consumers of Downtown Oakville businesses area from the area even more based on parking being taken up by walkers of the Boardwalk

Safety:  There are many homes that back out onto the 16 Mile Creek in this section which would bring direct access to the backs of each and everyone one of these homes which would pose a significant safety risk for these families and their children.

Millions of Dollars of Cost:  This project would be a multi-million dollar construction project and as tax payers would prefer to see those millions of tax payer's dollars allocated instead of needed upgrade to current Town facilities, infrastructure deficiencies, groups/organizations of Oakville in need or even tax savings for all citizens of Oakville given that all citizens of Oakville have all suffered financial impacts as a result of this devastating COVID Pandemic.
