Debra Tracht started this petition to Town of Middlebury

Middlebury College, Encore Renewable Energy, and Green Mountain Power have proposed a 30-acre, approx. 22,000 panel 5MW solar array project on South Street Extension, a location with expansive views of the Taconic and Green Mountains. This location has offered community members a rare opportunity to enjoy activities like walking and running on a safe, dirt road and provides solace in the presence of this expansive, natural beauty -- all within walking or biking distance from the center of town. This proposed solar array is massive in scale and inappropriate for this location.

While we wholeheartedly support solar energy as a solution to our energy crisis, it is equally vital to preserve the precious and unique beauty of our natural surroundings for generations to come.

This solar farm application falls under the jurisdiction of the Vermont Public Utility Commission (PUC) and is currently in a mandated public comment period before Encore Energy files with the PUC for a Certificate of Public Good for the project. It won't face a state Act 250 or local review; as a power-generating project, it will be judged by the PUC which will weigh comments from abutters, town officials, and the Addison County Regional Commission.

We ask the Selectboard to urge Middlebury College, Encore Renewable Energy, and Green Mountain Power to preserve this South Street Extension viewshed and to site the proposed 5MW solar array in a location with less impact on the community.
