Zahra Kara started this petition to Frank Scarpitti Town of Markham (Mayor - City of Markham)

Dear Town of Markham,

As a mother of two children under the age of two, the wonderful community resources in my community are a cornerstone of my family’s life. We frequent libraries, playgrounds, community centres and early years centres on an almost daily basis, throughout the year.

Unfortunately, I often find myself unnecessarily struggling because although there are accessible parking spots, there are none for new parents and/or expecting mothers. This means I sometimes have to lug around various bags while pushing my baby in a stroller and walking with or carrying my toddler- as you can imagine, this is especially tricky the colder temperatures and more so when it is raining or snowing.

I would like to propose the allotment of designated accessible spots for expecting mothers and new parents, just as private shopping malls and other facilities have begun to support, in public institutions throughout Markham.

Attending recreational and education centres is a right and one which should be supported by accessible parking spots for parents who have to go through so much to ensure their babies can be active members in society, not to mention mothers who need to feel included in society after childbirth and while on maternity leave, more than ever, as research shows this significantly reduces the impact of post-partum related illnesses.

Below find signatures of community members who agree.

Yours truly,

Zahra Kara, MSW
