We are voicing our concerns about the town closing off the County Rd 22 access from our subdivisions. We are already a VERY BUSY residential subdivision with many young kids AND it’s still expanding!  We’ve seen multiple accidents and close encounters, some involving children who have had to jump out of the way from the cars that go speeding around the corner. People use our street as a drag strip and we fear that closing off 22 will make it even worse by forcing them down our roads to get out to Renaud or Oakwood.

Just some of the things we have witnessed are cars jumping the curb, failing to stop at stop signs and speeding to beat the MANY MANY busses that go through here.  The town has had multiple calls about the speeding down our roads and now about our concerns for this road closure but all of our concerns are falling on deaf ears!   When our Ward Councilor canvased the area she heard this concern from the whole neighborhood!  Oakwood was opened and it helped a bit but this plan will make it even worse then before!  This affects our families, and the safety of our children.

They need more than just a survey that’s posted about on County Rd 22 to know how we all feel!  A survey that many of us have tried multiple times to take but the site will not let us access!  How many other people don’t want this to happen but can’t open the survey?!  How many people don’t even know it’s happening because nobody, not a single person outside the “study corridors” received any letters, or calls about this?

To make it worse, the “study corridor” was only told because a Councilor from a different ward pushed for notification to the families!  When the question of “When will the residents that will be affected by these closures be notified?” was asked, Essex County Development said “We will inform them about the Final Plan Open House and invite/encourage them to come!”  Where was our Councilor during all this?  Sitting silently watching instead of fighting for them to notify us all!

When we spoke to Mayor Tom Bain, he claimed that “Our safety is of the utmost importance to them” but how is this keeping all of us who live here safe when we will be affected negatively by this project?

The Essex County Development Committee claims to have done 1 assessment.            (Jan 14 2020 6:30-9:30am, 11am-1pm, 3:30-6:30pm) Not during after school busses, before Oakwood opened and as confirmed From Chrysler, was a LAY-OFF period and all of the feeder plants would have been off too!  When asked if they will do a updated study, said “it will make no significant difference and does not warrant a new study”

They assured us our north/south road will be minimally affected but we assure you that is NOT the case.  This “assessment” needs to be done during soccer season, hockey season, before and after school traffic and after work to get the true numbers that come through here.  There are times in the year when we cannot even back out of our driveways there are so many cars!  Not to mention the multitude of cars turning around in our driveways because they can’t access a road or are impeded by buses, traffic etc.

The Green Space, bike paths, walking paths, better flow of traffic, that’s all wonderful AND needed but what about the safety of all of these residential neighbourhood feeder streets with no calming traffic measures that are going to be done to date?!  Before Covid, the other end of Belle River (past shoppers) received widened lanes, sidewalks on both sides, parking/bike lanes on both sides and it was added with No road closures.  Why can’t the same be done on this side?!
