Concerned Citizens of greater Kensington, MD started this petition to mayor.council@tok.md.gov

On February 6, 2017 we learned the news that Kensington's neighborhood hardware store, Hardware City plans to close their doors. We have relied on them for decades because of their convenient location, wide selection of products and helpful staff.

Retail businesses come and go but one of the contributing factors that affects them are taxation and regulation. Unlike Montgomery County, Gaithersburg and Rockville, the Town of Kensington does not exempt "commercial inventory" from taxation resulting in a hefty personal property tax bill for retailers like Hardware City. The State of Maryland also penalizes these businesses with their antiquated traders license fee system that is also tied to commercial inventory.

The Town of Kensington could improve its retail business climate by exempting "commercial inventory" from taxation as all Maryland Counties and many municipalities have done. The Town can also go on record as supporting House Bill 859 that would reform Maryland's antiquated system of traders license fees, municipal inventory taxation and annual report filing fees.
