Please continue funding for the South Shore Nature Center

A precious Long Island resource is under threat.
The South Shore Nature Center, nestled in East Islip, N.Y., is a natural habitat for a diverse array of native Long Island wildlife and an oasis for migratory birds. Since the 1970s, the 206-acre SSNC has educated thousands of nature lovers and students from local schools. Among its most unique features are the elevated boardwalks that unobtrusively meander through the preserve, bringing people close to nature without disturbing it.
The walkways, built by my father, Christian Kranenberg, were as much a labor of love as a paying job, and after 30 years still stand strong, and are legacy to his enrichment of the community.
The SSNC provides:
• A museum with an onsite naturalist
• Educational and recreational programs for families and school groups
• 1.75 miles of walking trails
• More than 5000 student visitors per year
• An additional 10,000 walk-in visitors per year
• A natural habitat and preserve for wildlife
• Year-round access with expanded summer hours
But the Town of Islip recently voted to eliminate funding for the South Shore Nature Center, along with the 3 jobs associated with the preserve. This petition is intended to rally support for restoring its funding.
Aside from losing the obvious amenities that this preserve provides, loss of the SSNC also risks losing opportunities for our future stewards of the environment. For me personally, programs at a similar nature preserve near my home, have educated and inspired my daughter to persue a career in the Earth sciences. While it is impossible to truly measure the impact to communities if such resources were to disappear, by signing this petition, you help leave open the possibility for local children and residents to be similarly inspired.
Please help us to preserve this precious Long Island resource by signing this petition. Thank you.
