Cindy Penkoff started this petition to Town Council and

First it should be known this is an appointed position not an elected one.

I was recently contacted by families of Law Enforcement regarding divisive Facebook postings made by the Chairperson of the Diversity Task Force of all things. The subject; the thin blue line flag; a symbol of support for our officers. The men and women we rely on daily to keep us safe.

This is just an ongoing conversation in this town regarding a group that does not respect law enforcement but more than that, continues to make their families feel unsafe and unworthy or the respect we all deserve and make their lives that much more stressful. As if watching your loved one walk out the door every day not knowing if they will come home because their job is to keep others safe, was not stressful enough.

Their children are bullied and harassed on line, on the playground and at school. Some of the stories I have heard are heart breaking. No child should have to stay quiet about what their parent does for a living for fear of it being used against them, yet that is what they experience every single day. Their spouses do not talk about the work that can leave them lonely and in emotional pain. They do not always use their real names on social media or will use their maiden name in order to not be used as pawns against their family members or add to the burden their children already endure.

The reality is, none of us can know for sure, what this job can do to you and your loved ones. We can hear the stories, we can read the statistics and accounts but, unless you live it, you will never know.

So as members of the community many of us display the flag with the thin blue line; to show our support, our respect. To show that we see them and appreciate that they have taken on a job that most of us could never do. To show that we have their backs because they have ours.

But, the Chairman would have you believe that this flag is a sign of racism, a sign of hate. They have compared it to the confederate flag, making them interchangeable. That the term Blue Lives Matter is nothing more than a not so veiled attempt, a nod, to white nationalist.

We have called on First Selectman Vicki Tesoro and if need be the Town Council, to remove the Chairperson from this committee. As of this writing, that has not happened. If diversity is truly the goal of this committee, this is not the way to go about it and this is not the person to lead it. When your goal is to create an atmosphere “Where all residents will have and feel that they have opportunity and representation, by listening to and engaging with community members”, yet you think it is ok to be disrespectful to any individual group, you have failed.
