Charge a fee for plastic bags in Stonewall businesses!

We, the undersigned citizens of Stonewall and surrounding area, call upon the Town Council of Stonewall to enact the necessary policy or policies to ensure that all licensed retailers within our town begin charging $.05 per bag to encourage customers and the surrounding areas of rural Manitoba, to consider environmentally-sustainable alternatives to plastic. Many Canadian cities, such as Thompson and Montreal, are banning the use of plastic bags while others have implemented reduction strategies. It is time that Stonewall retailers and citizens join the worldwide efforts to reduce the use of plastics and move forward in the fight for environmental sustainability. Ultimately, our council should be looking to ban the use of plastic shopping bags all together; however, this would be a good first step.
