The town of Ogden Dunes is conducting a deer cull against the wishes of the vast majority of residents. They have also short-circuited the legal process by implementing the cull prior to the DNR hearing to evaluate the validity of the permit. Residents feel that the town's actions breach our democratic rights. In addition, the laws in Indiana are written to support the hunting industry rather than the people.
Even though the majority of Ogden Dunes residents oppose the cull of deer roaming freely along the dunes of northwest Indiana, town council members voted to slaughter forty deer without the residents' approval due to the last minute undisclosed rescheduling of the town meeting on Monday December 10th from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Almost all Ogden Dunes residents (85%) disapprove of this useless killing of deer which, according to the town council, is necessary because the deer are a "nuisance" to a few residents' selfish complaints (including the President of the council, Allen Johnson) concerning the "destruction" of vegetation and flowers on their properties. Mr. Johnson plans to completely eliminate the deer population within three years instead of implementing preventative measures to maintain the fragile balance between man and nature.
Don't let the town council of Ogden Dunes continue to ruthlessly slaughter these innocent creatures in the name of aesthetics and private interests. Please sign this petition and also call the Town Council at (219) 762-4125 or email them at http://ogdendunes.org/contact.html and demand that Allen Johnson and the other council members immediately end their inhumane and irrational murder of Ogden Dunes deer . Stop the deer cull in Ogden Dunes until the DNR hearing to evaluate the validity of the permit. Review the laws in Indiana so that residents are given a voice in the legal process for DNR permits.
