Nathan Baerreis started this petition to Town Council of Murphy NC and

Murphy NC has been in the news lately because a local business puts up hateful political billboards.  This has caused a cooling effect on tourism as visitors are avoiding our town because of a change in the perception of what Murphy is.

We feel that it is imperative the Town Council and the Mayor come together to declare Murphy NC a Town of Tolerance; to publicly define and represent the citizenry of Murphy accurately as the loving and accepting people they are while eschewing the hatred and intolerance for which we're becoming known.

The vocal few here have made many of us want to leave, but we think we should at least make the statement that we're not represented by the ugliness that has caught the media's attention.

Instead of deflecting the issue, we'd like the town leaders to face it squarely and decry the attitudes we're becoming known for. Please sign this petition and lend your name to our effort to offset the hatred and intolerance that has lately been found in the spotlight.

From the author of this petition: "I've lived in the Murphy area for nearly 20 years, and the local population includes some of the most caring, kind, generous, creative, and thoughtful people I've ever encountered. It would be a shame if hatred contained in these billboards is allowed to create discord in order to create a marketing opportunity, embolden the racist and hateful people and successfully drive out the historically tolerant population. We must resist, and not give up without highlighting the better nature of the people here."
