Petition Closed

This petition calls upon the Vice Chancellor of the Australian National University to improve the current system, and to recognise the rights, wellbeing and protection of students with dependents (spouse and child/children) equally as with all other students.

Within the student population at ANU there are students who are parents. Some of them bring  their families (spouse and children) from their home country before beginning their program; others became parent during the duration of their degrees. Students, who are parent, have to deal with a number of situations that are unique and are different from their non-parent peers. These include among others: being discriminated from ANU accommodation services and semi-excluded from on campus child care centres.

We therefore request all university´s authorities take serious measures now including:

1.- Incorporate family accommodation to the university accommodation service.

2.- Give priority to students with child/children when applying for an on campus child care or early education centres. Provide a guarantee that no student should wait for more than a semester as the benchmark waiting period.

3.- Create a bursary to provide partial assistance to international students to cover the costs of child care centre and early education.

4.- Create a central database of the number of students who are parents Keep and to identify their needs systematically and provide a status report on actions taken by the university to address them..

The above measures are important because they have a direct impact in the dignity of the student, the wellbeing of their families, the fairness of the academic competition within the university, and the decision-making-process of future students with family in favour of studying at ANU.
