A few short months after declaring "the restoration of turkeys as one of the greatest wildlife management success stories in the state", the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources approved the Wauwatosa Health Department's request to remove 6 wild turkeys by cruelly trapping and slaughtering them.
This flock of wild turkeys were a favorite of the surrounding area. Before their killing, one could search “Tosa Turkeys” online to find an array of social-media photos and official news coverage celebrating their presence - the City of Wauwatosa's official Twitter account even chimed in to share tips on how to coexist with our wild friends.
The killing and slaughter of these wild turkeys defies the City of Wauwatosa's public posting on their official website regarding urban turkey management which states, "The City of Wauwatosa does not use turkey traps or other animal control devices on turkeys. We encourage residents to let wildlife, including turkeys, to coexist in our urban landscape."
This public posting has been on the City of Wauwatosa's official website as of Monday February 21st, almost two weeks after brazenly contradicting it.
The unilateral, underhanded deception by the Wauwatosa Health Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to slaughter wildlife betrayed public trust - it is wrong, it should not have happened and this conduct is unacceptable.
Sign this petition to let the City of Wauwatosa know that their disregard for information publicly posted on their official website and abandonment of public trust resulting in the killing of innocent wildlife is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
The City of Wauwatosa must transparently establish an OFFICIAL policy for urban turkey management and include community input.
THE NEEDLESS KILLING OF WILDLIFE CANNOT HAPPEN AGAIN.
Consider messaging the City of Wauwatosa on Twitter or directly contacting the people responsible to let them know the needless killing of wildlife and defying official policy will not be tolerated:
