Appeals for donations to the only trans-run agency in Toronto

Dear signatories,

Thank you for the overwhelming support to the petition requesting for TPL to cancel the talk by Meghan Murphy. We collected close to 10, 000 signatures! As you know, the talk went ahead but the resistance that we launched was loud and clear. It's far from over. We will continue to demand and create safe spaces for trans, 2-Spirit people and communities. Last month, a historic teach-in called TRANScend/TRANSform was held at the 519 with writers, Kai Cheng Thom, Gwen Benaway, activist, Chanelle Gallant and award winning advocate and founder/Director of Trans Pride Toronto, Monica Forrester.

At the teach-in, Monica appealed to us to raise funds for a permanent space for a trans-run agency. Please consider donating and sharing this appeal. Below is Monica's message with instructions on how to donate through e-transfer.

Best, Carrianne

Hi all, I'm writing to you as the founder and director of Trans Pride Toronto and I am reaching out for your support in getting the only trans-run agency in Toronto a permanent space!

Last month, I was part of a conversation with over 200 community members who attended the Trans Teach-In in Toronto. We talked about how the Toronto Public Libraries’ decision to host transphobic/transmisogynistic speaker Megan Murphy discriminated against trans women, trans women in the women’s movement and the importance of trans women’s inclusion in public spaces.

I know you care about rights and respect for trans people so I’m writing to you about another way you can support us-- by giving to Trans Pride Toronto--Transitioning Together.

In 2004, I founded Trans Pride Toronto as a way for trans and 2Spirit people to create awareness about the issues and needs of our community. I specifically wanted to create a safe space where marginalized and sex working trans women could get support with advocacy, housing, court accompaniment and counseling in an environment where they can be themselves without feeling silenced or stigmatized for who they are.

And now Trans Pride Toronto has finally secured a home for our agency! We'll be opening our doors at the Trinity Church in downtown Toronto and providing trans groups, drop-in, food, community and political advocacy. And we need your help!

I’ve been at the heart of trans community for 30 years, using my relationships, education and skills to support trans people to live their lives with safety and dignity. I've worked in over a dozen agencies, often as their first trans staff member. I helped found the first trans program in Canada and have helped countless agencies become more trans friendly. Now it’s time for trans people to have a trans-led agency that centres marginalized trans women.

Will you join us in making a donation to Trans Pride Toronto?
