Community Voice in Bloor-Dufferin Property Sale

Build a Better Bloor Dufferin started this petition to Daryl Sage (CEO Toronto Land Corporation) and

We, the undersigned, demand that the redevelopment at Bloor & Dufferin include community facilities, affordable housing, and reinvestment in Bloor Collegiate as asked for by the community.  These lands are a longstanding community asset, and thus development plans must have tangible benefits for the community.

We demand that the sale of the Bloor Dufferin lands take into account the desires of the community, even if that means a longer process to assemble the stakeholders and resources needed to build an innovative, vibrant place that will serve both private and community needs.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is selling the 7.3 acres that Bloor Collegiate and Kent Public School sit on.  Bids are being submitted by private developers right now.

The TDSB has said that it wants to sell the property to the highest bidder. It has said that this will mean condominium towers.  It has NOT guaranteed that any community facilities or non-luxury housing will be included.

The Provincial Government has “asked” for community facilities to be included in the development but has not committed any funding to make this possible.

The selection of the successful bid or bids is expected to be made by the TDSB's  Toronto Lands Corporation before the end of 2016 and perhaps much sooner.

We demand that the community be consulted in the bid selection process.

We demand that the Premier fast-track funding for a community hub and commit existing funding for affordable housing BEFORE a bid is selected.

We demand that the bid selection reflect the community consultation to date and  include:

 1.      a significant, prominent, fully-built “community hub” for community service agencies and arts organizations

 2.      fully-built and fully-equipped community event spaces

 3.      affordable and rental housing

 4.      dedicated space for other community needs like daycare

 5.      preservation of historic architecture

 6.      significant reinvestment in Bloor Collegiate
