Whereas children and youth in the education system who are described as “exceptional” and who live the Black experience face daily challenges from the double barriers.
The TDSB is aware of the challenges and has designed an equity policy to support change within the education system as outlined below.
“To ensure that fairness, equity, acceptance, and inclusion are essential principles of our school system and are integrated into all TDSB policies, procedures, programs, operations, and practices.”
It is evident the intent is far different than its outcome, Black children and youth continue to struggle in the classrooms since teachers are not culturally sensitive and do not have training on mental health. Thus, these students are given the heavy-handed, one size fits all approach when faced with consequences that are authoritative.
Be it resolved, we want to enforce the following to reflect a diverse and inclusive environment for all students of colour;
- Implementing equity principles within the curriculum by incorporating training for staff on cultural sensitivity and mental health.
- Developing an Ethnocultural Advisory Committee to discuss challenges with staff and support workers while providing effective strategies specific to the needs of the ethnocultural community.
