Andrew Dodds started this petition to Michael Ford (Councillor Etobicoke North) and

Right now, housing issues are front of mind for people like never before. People from all walks of life are suffering from runaway prices, inadequate supply, and inability to change these things, whether it is retirees whose options to downsize are fewer and more expensive than ever before, couples having to choose jobs or family because options to do both are so few, or people in desperate need of suitable housing to keep them safe.

Currently, the old city of Toronto is the only place where Multi-Tenant housing is legal, with small, challenging exceptions for these cost-conscious homes in York and Etobicoke. This kind of housing is a great source of low cost shelter, whether it be for retirees sharing community, students facing high tuition, or residents of lower means looking to stay close to family, opportunities, and necessary supports.

The city is proposing to legalize & regulate this housing everywhere. This would allow it to be kept safe rather than being unregulated and not secure, and would mean providers would not have to compete for the few available options in the old city core with developers, because those who need housing will be able to find it closer to family, work, school, and services, letting people live where they need to (https://www.toronto.ca/community-people/housing-shelter/multi-tenant-rooming-houses/)

This will help retirees to stay in their communities more easily, students to manage the incredible cost of education while spending less time on long commutes or in unregulated spaces, and ensure a key secure, safe shelter option exists for people as they move up or have life knock them down on their journey, so that no jump is too high to manage, and no fall so great that it need break us.

Let Toronto know that, like the old Stone Soup story, we can each lend our individual voice of support, hardly noticing this passing moment, in order to help make an opportunity real for our neighbours in need, which will drastically shape their lives for the better.

Sign today, before their vote this Wednesday July 14th, and better yet, email your councillor to let them know this issue matters to you! (https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/council/members-of-council/)
