Tavia Van Damme started this petition to Councillor Ainslie (Guildwood) and

CrossFit Canuck is a small community gym that has been serving the Scarborough Community since 2012.  We are a LGBTQ, female owned business that has weathered the COVID storm and are ready to continue operating in whatever capacity the current law allows.

Our lease in our current space will be expiring at the end of August. Due to commercial rent prices doubling in the last 5 years and the impacts of the pandemic we can no longer afford the space we are in. We have set out to find a new smaller space that suits our needs.

In February 2021 we found a space directly across the street from us at 705 Progress Avenue.  We contacted the Agent for the space and submitted our rental application. The space was formerly a Dance Studio, and it is well equipped for recreational use (including change rooms and showers).  The space was empty and available.  We believed that our search was over, and we had found a new home. 705 Progress Ave is owned by the City of Toronto and the Toronto Public School Board (TDSB).   Weeks, and then months have passed and we have yet to hear a response from the City.  In early June, we received notification  "The City will not be making a decision on leasing this property, so look elsewhere." We have been waiting for over 6 months for a response.

We have contacted our local representative Councillor Ainslie who oversees our Ward.  We have made a plea as a small business for their help to save us.  We have been through so much with government closures and survived.  If we don't find a new space, we will be forced to close our doors. The impact to our family and the families of our employees will be great. This city space is not only a perfect fit, but it is empty, and available. Our pleas to Councillor Ainslie's office have fallen on deaf ears as we have not even been acknowledged by his office.

Over 100 of our members have written letters to Councillor Ainslie's office in our support. They are still awaiting a reply.

Even though 705 Progress is a perfect fit for our business, we have continued to look for an alternative space.  The pandemic has greatly increased the market for industrial space.  Much like the current housing market, available industrial space is at a premium.  Due to the government imposed lockdowns,  Landlords have been reluctant to lease their spaces for recreational use. Many Landlords have rejected our application to lease their space simply because we are a Fitness Facility.   We are going on 9 years in business. We have never missed a rent payment even through the pandemic.  This discrimination is greatly impacting our ability to secure an alternative space. Once again Small Business is being greatly impacted by the government restrictions.

The City has a chance to save our small business by awarding us the lease. We are not looking for a discount or break, we just want the opportunity to lease the space that is otherwise sitting empty.  Our time is ticking, and the city is choosing to not respond and we just don't understand why. Please help us create awareness and hopefully bring forth a response from City Council. Tax payers money is being wasted with this space sitting empty. We are ready and able to pay full market value for this space.

We are committed to serving the City Of Scarborough with their Health and Wellness needs....we just need a home to do so.

Thank you for your time.
