topshop should use paper bags in all of its stores to help fight single use plastics

Single use plastics are one of the biggest problems the next generation face - by the year 2050 it is estimated that there will be more plastic in the ocean than there will be fish. Plastic pollution can now be found on every single beach in the world, from busy tourist beaches to uninhabited tropical islands, nowhere is safe. 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and 1 million seabirds are killed by marine plastic pollution each year and recent studies have revealed marine plastic pollution in 100% of marine turtles, 59% of whales, 40% of seabird species and 36% of seals out of all of the animals examined.

Recently I have visited topshop in London and I noticed that they use paper bags. However, in all of my local areas they use single use plastic bags so it begs the question - if they can use paper bags in London, why can’t they use paper bags in all of their shops?

Hopefully with this petition we can bring this to the attention of the people in the topshop company or the Arcadia group (parent company), in order to make a positive change that will benifit the ocean from single use plastic and help reduce litter around our streets. Paper is biodegradable, so if people are lazy and throw away the bag instead of binning/recycling it, then at least it won’t have a lasting effect on the environment.

If we achieve the aim of this petition we will have made massive steps in the right direction and be able to approach other stores and corporations around the world.

Showing the results of this petition and hopefully the many future petitions, we will show how this simple change in topshop’s ways will have a lasting positive effect on the environment that we all love and care for!

If we lose this petition we will continue to see ugly plastic pollution and there will be lasting negative consequences for all our marine wildlife, which will have a serious negative impact for the coming generations.

Thank you for signing the petition.
