Topshop should not be normalising self harm
Topshop, the women's fashion store, has recently started selling a new line of accessories. These temporary tattoos are gold scars, part of a wider range of 'self love' accessories designed in collaboration with Central Saint Martin's art school.
See the product here.
The tagline of the product, of celebrating your 'imperfections' seems distasteful in the case of scars but more worrying still is how the majority of the designs resemble self harm scars.
Topshop should not be normalising self harm or presenting it as a fashion trend. Not only is the glamorisation of self injury dangerous for the mainly teenage demographic but harmful for others who have struggled with self harm and see what for them, is a painful reminder being presented as acceptable - as long as it's temporary and elegant.
As someone who researches child and adolescent mental health with the NHS, I know that teenagers are extremely susceptible to fashion trends. Self harm is a serious problem in teenagers. Many of my friends with mental health problems have been in life-endangering situations, and often due to self harm appearing 'cool' or 'fun'. Self harm is a horrible symptom of mental health disorders (including depression and anxiety) and should not be encouraged.
The connotations of this product are at least offensive and at worse highly dangerous. Topshop, please reconsider your actions.
