Sarah Alston started this petition to Topsail Beach town commissioners and

The Town of Topsail Beach, NC has spent millions of dollars on beach renourishment projects and will continue to do so as long as the beach remains a destination for beach lovers as well as a habitat for many coastal wildlife species.  In recent years, Topsail Beach property owners have been assessed additional fees for renourishment which are added to the property tax bill.  FEMA and other Federal Government agencies have kicked in portions of the cost and because of those federal funds the Town of Topsail Beach is required to maintain the beach following renourishment activities.  We don’t see the maintenance happening.
As a property owner in Topsail Beach I am always impressed with the renourishment projects, however as soon as the beach driving season opens up, the beautiful strand immediately ruined.  Rutted out by 4-wheel drive vehicles, stained black from dripping oil and other noxious motor fluids the beach looks like a construction zone from October to May.  It is difficult to navigate the ruts, especially for small dogs and humans with bad knees and old injuries. The real kicker is that creating these huge ruts means moving the expensive, renourished sand around over and over again and it makes me angry because I and my fellow property owners have paid a lot for that sand.
The Town of Topsail Beach is required to maintain the original design of the renourished beach.  The rutted sand cannot possibly be part of the design and of course it was not like that when the project was completed.
Please support my petition to halt driving on the beach in Topsail Beach, NC.

Here is short list of points to help you understand why it is important:

·     The 4-wheel vehicles are destroying the original design of the beach renourishment projects.  This is not being properly monitored or repaired by the Town of Topsail.
·     The seasonal driving on the beach, from October through April, disrupts not only the human activity but also the wildlife activity.  The sand is altered so drastically by the vehicles that sand inhabitants cannot survive and may not always recover during the non-driving season (May - September).
·     During the driving season, trash is much more of problem on the beach and for much longer stretches of the beach which normally don't have a trash problem.  (I have seen this every year for 18 years.)
·     There does not seem to be a speed limit.
·     Why are we so far behind other coastal towns in protecting our beautiful beach?

There are so many more reasons to eliminate driving on the beach and many personal observations that could be placed here but enough is said to explain my petition.  Thank you for signing and supporting the petition.
