Topix, based in Palo Alto, Calif., is owned in part by several major newspaper companies — Gannett, Tribune and McClatchy — but has independent editorial control. It was initially envisioned as a hyperlocal news aggregator with separate pages for every community in the country. But most of its growth was in small cities and towns, and local commenters wanted to shift the conversation to more traditional gossip.
Topix has become a staple in small towns as a means to get gossip out in the open, anonymously. The mass amounts of trouble that is started, and the filthy slander/lies that is displayed on this website is enough to make anyone crazy. I believe in freedom of speech, but this is just not how it was intended to be. If you're going to say something, SAY IT TO SOMEONE'S FACE or put a name to it. This site only facilitates the attack of innocent people by anonymous bullies, aka cyber bullying.
