Australian Support Resources started this petition to Brad Hazzard (NSW Health)

“We want the support we were promised”

NDIS participants, particularly those with chronic mental health conditions or dual diagnoses, continue to remain in limbo between NDIA and Health NSW. Service providers and participants are constantly being hand balled between both departments whilst they point the finger of responsibility at each other.
The gap between the NDIA and Health NSW means:

  • Participants are unable to access affordable, quality services from psychiatrists.
  • Participants are unable to access appropriate supports for drug and alcohol related issues.
  • Participants who access the scheme due to chronic mental health conditions, are unable to receive funding for physiotherapy, podiatry or other “physical” supports.
  • Participants are pigeon-holed and comorbidities are often not considered when building plans. There are participants with significant histories of chronic homelessness, during which time physical and psychosocial conditions develop. However, the physical factors such as back and neck injuries from sleeping rough, which often contribute significantly to mental health, are disregarded by the NDIA.
  • Participants who experience a dual diagnosis (disability and mental health) are unable to address all elements of their diagnosis which contradicts the person centered model that the scheme is built on.

These are just a few examples and though it may seem simple enough to go between the two departments, we are more often than not faced with time consuming, stressful and ambiguous procedures which are especially difficult for the thousands of participants without support coordination funding.

This process is often so overwhelming that people decide to not go through with it at all, leaving crucial areas of their health and wellbeing unattended!

We want a bridge between the NDIS and Health NSW. A middle ground whereby participants and service providers can work in collaboration with these government bodies to achieve what we all want; a healthier Australia.

Sign the petition today to get the NDIA and NSW Health to raise this issue and come up with a solution.
