Urgent: Letter Requesting Action on Oakland School Board

Dear Mr. Thurmond and Mr. Bonta,

On Monday March 4th, the OUSD school board will meet to vote on budget cuts to trigger AB1840. This meeting absolutely subverts the will of the community, who protested and had 3 board meetings cancelled last weekend before the AB1840 deadline of March 1st. Only a legally questionable extension of this state bill by a county official, Karen Monroe, has allowed this vote to proceed on Monday.

As educators and community members in Oakland, we urge you to use the power of your state offices to stop the AB1840 or related budget cut vote, in whatever form it is taking, from happening. This would need to happen before 10:30am on the morning of Monday March 4th.

Less preferably, you could nullify any vote on AB1840 or related budget cuts because this vote is occurring after the state-mandated deadline. This option is less preferable because any AB1840 votes should not even be allowed to take place given the deadline.

We understand that your intention for this bill differed from its actualization in the hands of Oakland’s school board and superintendent, who are now openly pursuing a portfolio district model. Their goals in this model include using AB1840 to close up to 24 public schools (not charters) and to likely divest real estate from the district. These actions are directly opposed to fostering a high-quality public school district and should be immediately stopped. The community has spoken loudly and clearly by preventing these votes from happening. Now, we ask you to make sure Ms. Monroe does not supersede her authority under state law.

Furthermore, as you have indicated this past weekend, please recommend to Gavin Newsom that Oakland’s ill-begotten debt be forgiven. This act will simultaneously alleviate any need for AB1840 and ameliorate the financial stress currently facing the district.
