Turn abandoned malls into housing opportunities for the homeless

Turn abandoned malls into housing opportunities for the homeless
Hundreds of malls and thousands of mall-based stores have closed in the past two decades, and many more may close within the next 10 years. Meanwhile, homelessness has started to rise again. The federal government in 2017 reported that there were 554,000 homeless nationwide, including nearly 58,000 families with children. The options for repurposing malls are nearly endless. But the reality is that many abandoned malls remain… well, abandoned. Instead of demolishing these buildings why don't we refurbish and rehome the homeless community? We can create a two-year program for individuals/families where we help teach the necessary skills to re-integrate into society and better support and care for themselves. We provide housing, create/find jobs, and teach financial literacy. We help create a savings account or Certificate of Deposit (CD) where an individual cannot touch the money during that term. A term can range anywhere from three months to five years (60 months). In the program, you must contribute to the upkeep of the area. Kitchen duties, cleaning, laundry, janitorial. In the jobs we provide, I'm hoping we can get many people into the trades, construction, factories, military, mechanic, customer service roles, urban planning and development. I am hoping we can work with local food drives, restaurants, Goodwill, St. Vinnies, Volunteers of America, Habitat for Humanity, Charity Navigator, REI, etc. I propose we create living opportunities for the homeless with abandoned buildings/malls.
