At this moment of crisis that challenges the strength and vibrancy of our democracy, people all across America are calling on our leaders to tone down their political rhetoric and toughen up the laws that keep us safe.
In the aftermath of the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the senseless shootings in Tucson, we can no longer tolerate violence-strewn political language or reckless media chatter that put dangerous ideas in disturbed people’s minds.
And even more essentially, we must have zero tolerance for the weakening of gun laws and the undermining of law enforcement efforts that put dangerous weapons in disturbed people’s hands.
We, the undersigned, are calling on elected leaders of every party, every ideology and every level of government to make a deep and lasting commitment to toning down the rhetoric and toughening up the laws to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.
34 people are murdered with guns every day. And we refuse to let the NRA or anyone else dictate what our democracy can do to stop that violence.
