Micaela Ledesma started this petition to Tomahawk elementary school

Tomahawk elementary school is a school in a predominantly Hispanic community. Their mascot is an indigenous man wearing a headdress. The elementary school openly call themselves the warriors. Not only does this further dehumanize a group of people who have long suffered in this country, but it helps reinforce the stereotypes and misconceptions over them. As an alumni from this school, I can confirm that the children are taught nothing over the true history of indigenous people but instead are taught the whitewashed history of Columbus’ arrival and the colonizer’s supposed friendship with the indigenous people. With the school’s population being nearly, if not all, non-indigenous, these children will grow up with seeing indigenous people as war-like and less than human. I have contacted the school but I want to create this petition to let them know that I am not the only one who believes they should replace their school mascot and name. Their mascot and name was never acceptable but there is no excuse considering today’s social climate.
