The U.S. spends over 6 billion dollars a year on youth corrections facilities, yet the children serving time in these detention centers show little to no sign of rehabilitation. Between 70 and 80 percent of youth who are released from corrections facilities are rearrested for a new offense within two to three years of their release. This statistic shows that the current system is flawed, so we believe that reconstructing the system to reflect rehabilitation, similar to the Missouri approach, will have a positive effect on incarcerated youth and society as a whole. After Missouri reconstructed its juvenile detention centers, over 65 percent of released youth did NOT commit further felonies.
