Paul Feig to direct Amy Schumer's Barbie movie
2016 has been a great year for female empowerment films. Edge of Seventeen, Finding Dory, Bad Moms, ect... have all driven the idea home that women can be smart, adventurous, role breaking, and absolutely heartwarming. But no other movie has come close to capturing all those previous attributes, as well as adding downright hilarious, than Paul Feig's Ghostbusters.
The story of four career women in New York City, working for themselves, and battling ghosts was the best film of the summer for me. It spoke to me on a level that very few films lately have. It told me that, I, could achieve anything I wanted to despite any societal road blocks that might stand in my way. That is a feeling I wish to have more in the cinema, and right now Paul Feig is the best director to give it to me (as well as my daughters, and niece).
Recently it was announced that Mattel had teamed up with Sony to produce a live-action adaption of Barbie. This was always a tough property to tackle (given that body confidence issues surrounding the toy's history is always present), but when it was revealed that comedienne Amy Schumer would be playing the title role, I thought to myself that only one human could direct it. Paul Feig.
The story of Barbie is that she's exiled from Barbieland because she's not "pretty enough". That is a reality that many women deal with on a constant basis, and one that is hard to translate to the silver screen. However, Mr. Feig's body of work speaks for itself when it comes to showcasing wonderfully talented women, who are also utterly hysterical. Bridesmaids, The Heat, and Spy are masterpieces of female comedy, and Ghostbusters is right there with them.
My hope is that this petition can reach Mr. Paul Feig, and persuade him to talk to Tom Rothman about taking on the directing responsibilities of Barbie. This movie is one that can only be told by a crew of people who truly understand women; why we rock, and why we're funny.
