Marijuana and other non-violent drug related offenses have put away hundreds of thousands of individuals in the Cook County Prison System. With the outbreak of COVID-19, now more then ever we need to eradicate overpopulation of prisons. The prison system should be used for felons that pose real threats to society, not themselves. Even with the legalization of marijuana, there are still thousands of felons that are locked behind bars in the Cook County Prison. The recent overcrowding of this prison system has lead to an insurmountable number of Covid related deaths and sicknesses among inmates. In order to mitigate this number of deaths, we need to depopulate the prison system. What better way to depopulate the system then by releasing prisoners for charges that are LEGAL today? Its easy for us on the outside to not even give a prisoner the time of day, but it is hard to sit back and watch inmates locked up for something so harmless like a marijuana offense. The removal of non-violent drug offenders would no doubt depopulate prisons as well as lower the number of deaths related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
