Gatewood Elementary is a historical landmark. Gatewood Elementary first opened its doors in 1927. Generations of families have attended class in this same building! Closing its doors would be heartbreaking to so many people that love and cherish this place! We want the school board to know that closing Gatewood or any of the other schools is not an option! There ARE other ways to cut thier budget and We want them to find a different solution. Closing these buildings will not solve the problem anyway. There are a number of reasons why. One reason is that the schools that are supposed to absorb the displaced students will have to hire new teachers to accommodate the large influx of new enrollments. If they do not hire new teachers, the class sizes at these schools will become very large which is not fair for the existing students and staff. Hiring new teachers would be the only way that they could feasibly do this. However, that defeats the purpose of this whole thing in the first place because it would cost money. The numbers just don't add up. We want to show the district that we are against the decision to close Gatewood, Edgemere, Green Pastures, Moon, and Johnson Elementary. We love these schools and will do everything in our power to keep them open.
