Why this petition matters

Crab Apple offers accommodation to Tofino’s workforce with proper amenities, safety, and community at an affordable rate.

The people living there are grateful and happy to be part of a loving and caring community, as well as being able to have accommodation in a place that is becoming more and more difficult and expensive to live .

Crab Apple constitutes of people from all walks of life and each of them contribute to the local economy and workforce.
There are people working at different venues and stores like Shelter, Shed, SoBo, Coop Grocery, Coop Gas, Tacofino, Beaches Grocery, Wildside Grill, Kuma, Wolf In The Fog, Wickanninish Inn, Tofino Surf School, Surf Sister, Long Beach Resort, etc etc. There are also people holding trades and working in different areas of construction as painters, carpenters, electricians.

The Tofino Council is trying to shut Crab Apple and evict all of its workforce because they deem one way of living, which is RVing and camping, not adequate. This can be found on Page 158 onwards of their agenda:

"Further, the most recent AHNA (2015) indicates that the majority of Tofino residents would prefer to live in a single-family dwelling, townhouse, or other type of housing over camping."

Although one might prefer to live in traditional housing, it is simply impossible with the current housing crisis in Tofino and some people may also prefer alternative modes of living as well. Shutting down Crab Apple is definitely not a solution to the housing crisis. In fact, Tofino needs to have more options for housing and workers’ campgrounds like Crab Apple is one of those solutions to an on-going and worsening problem. It would not be in the town’s best interests to let that go.

The Council meeting will be held this upcoming Tuesday, April 13th 2021. Let’s stop Council from shutting down Crab Apple and forcing eviction on a significant part of Tofino’s workforce and have them nowhere else to go. Let Council know that it is not OK to deem one way of living better versus other types of living.
