Protect the Unique Cultural Institution of Westminster Reference Library

Why is this SO important?
The library has a designated status as a specialist collection of over 15,000 books on the performing arts, a third of which are available to borrow. It also houses a unique archive of arts publications, some going back to the 19th century.
There is no library like it in the UK, possibly in Europe.
It has historically offered a wonderful research resource for members of the public, national and international arts students and London's theatrical and arts communities. And it has provided a venue for a range of diverse arts events and a hub for debate and interaction, a ‘creative city’ open to a new and ever changing audience. See HERE for just one example.
Westminster is drastically reducing its libraries budget.
Staff surviving the proposed cuts at the reference library will have to manage on a skeleton rota with no time to maintain activity beyond basic services. This will lead to an inevitable decline in service making the library vulnerable to a future potential case made for its closure.
The Library makes a crucial cultural contribution to London's West End. The library occupies an historic building on the site of Isaac Newton's house and sits directly behind the National gallery providing a free public heart right in the commercial centre of the city's theatre and cinema district. Find out more HERE.
Please sign and share the petition to make sure the funding of the library and its staffing levels are maintained so that the library can continue to make such a positive contribution to the life of Westminster and those who live, work in and visit London.
